Quick answer: R-22 is no longer produced, so older R-22 systems can only be recharged with limited recycled supply and are usually worth replacing when they need major work. R-410A systems can still be repaired and serviced. Since January 1, 2025, new residential split systems are manufactured with lower-global-warming refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32. In 2026 the EPA removed the separate January 1, 2026 installation deadline, so R-410A equipment made before 2025 can still be installed while supply lasts.
If you have heard that your air conditioner’s refrigerant is being “banned,” you are not alone. The rules have changed several times, and a lot of older articles are now out of date. Here is a plain-language summary for homeowners in West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County.
What is R-22 and can I still use it?
R-22 (often called Freon) was the standard refrigerant in air conditioners for decades. U.S. production and import of R-22 ended on January 1, 2020. Existing R-22 systems can still run and can still be serviced, but only with recycled or stockpiled refrigerant, which is scarce and expensive.
What it means for you: if an R-22 system develops a leak or a major failure, replacing the system is usually more cost-effective than recharging it. Most R-22 systems in South Florida are also well past their expected 10 to 15 year lifespan.
Is R-410A being phased out?
R-410A is being phased down, not banned from use. Under the EPA’s Technology Transitions rule, manufacturers stopped producing new residential split-system air conditioners and heat pumps charged with R-410A starting January 1, 2025. In 2026 the EPA finalized changes that removed the January 1, 2026 installation deadline, so existing R-410A equipment manufactured before 2025 can still be installed until that inventory runs out.
- Your existing R-410A system can be repaired and recharged as usual
- R-410A will remain available for service, though prices have risen as supply is reduced
- You do not need to replace a healthy R-410A system because of the rule
What are R-454B and R-32?
R-454B and R-32 are the refrigerants used in most new residential systems. They have a much lower global warming potential than R-410A and are classified as A2L, meaning mildly flammable. New equipment is designed and certified for them, and technicians follow updated handling and installation practices.
Because the equipment is designed around the refrigerant, you cannot simply put R-454B into an R-410A system. Switching refrigerants means installing a matched new system.
Should I replace my AC now or wait?
| Your situation | What usually makes sense |
|---|---|
| R-22 system with a leak or major failure | Replace the system |
| R-22 system still running fine | Plan and budget for replacement |
| R-410A system under 10 years old | Keep maintaining and repairing it |
| R-410A system over 12 to 15 years old with big repairs | Compare repair cost with a new R-454B or R-32 system |
